The Onion News has always been one of my favorite “fake” news sites here at On DVD Movies, and I can always count on getting a chuckle or two every time I visit. Their site, a fake news offering that bills itself as “America’s Finest News Source”, is a USA Today-style parody that is chock full of humorous articles. If you’ve never been to the site before, you might want to take a moment to check it out: The Onion Web Site. Not every article at The Onion web site hits the mark, but still there’s enough there to make a visit worthwhile. And so it is with “The Onion Movie”.

The Onion Movie trailer:

The “The Onion Movie” DVD is more or less a video version of The Onion News: a semi-believable news team delivering news and magazine-type stories in a familiar TV news format, with some skits and phony commercials worked in to liven up the mix. Like the print and online version of The Onion, “The Onion Movie” doesn’t always hit the mark, but there’s enough comedy there to make viewing it worthwhile.

A few of the more humorous stories and skits on “The Onion Movie” DVD are the recall of automobile “neck belts” which cause decapitation, a look at a Britney Spears-like singer named Melissa Cherry who is taken to task for her suggestive pop songs, and a skit featuring an armed robber who holds up a bank but wants something OTHER than money.

All in all, On DVD Movies says that “The Onion Movie” DVD is certainly worth watching if you enjoy Monty Python, SCTV, or SNL-type programs. While there may not be enough great stuff there to make this DVD one that you’ll want to add to your permanent collection, it is certainly worth a rent.

“The Onion Movie” was originally filmed in 2003, but was shelved for years, possibly because it didn’t test as well as the studio had hoped. It was finally released directly to DVD in 2008.
